I am pleased to announce the acquisition of Colony Ltd by Fantastec Sports Technology Ltd (Fantastec).
This is the first acquisition by Fantastec, a new sports technology innovator. Fantastec utilise new and emerging technologies such as VR/AR, wearable tech, AI, blockchain and now OTT VOD to develop products and platforms which enable globally distanced fans to better connect and engage more deeply with the sport they love. Fantastec was founded in 2017 by Steve Madincea, an international sport’s industry veteran, formerly Founder and Global Managing Director of PRISM (WPP Group Plc).
“We moved quickly with our investment group on Colony because they have the three vital ingredients we look for in any acquisition: industry leading technology, an inspired and capable leadership team, and a team ethos of continuous growth and constant innovation which aligns with Fantastec’s ambitions,” Madincea stated. I join the Fantastec group as Chief Operating Officer.
In the face of enormous disruption across the film industry, I founded Colony in 2013 to empower content owners to reach engaged audiences around the world. Over the coming years, the sports industry will face similar levels of disruption from a globalising fan base, along with rapidly changing tastes, demographics and habits. I am excited to apply Colony’s technology and in-market experience to a range of challenges and opportunities in the sports sector, and deliver on the fan driven vision of Fantastec.
Launched as a B2C platform for independent film and exclusive extra content, Colony worked with filmmakers, distributors and sales agents internationally, and amassed a global user base in over 130 countries. Colony’s award-winning technology comprises an innovative isomorphic web application framework, video architecture and full back office suite.
Madincea stated: “The OTT VOD technology developed at Colony is incredible and has served them well in their prior work in the worldwide movie industry. Fantastec will now utilise these bespoke technologies in a number of new platforms and products, with potential to reach worldwide audiences for all sports. This purchase aligns with our vision to make engaging with sports better via trailblazing technology”.
Colony was recognised in: The Everline Future 50 2016; Startups 100 2016 and 2017; The British Small Business Awards; The Drum’s DADI Awards; The Screen Awards; The Drum Online Media Awards; The Digital Entrepreneur Awards; and multiple senior staff were named in BIMA’s Hot 100 in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Colony was venture-backed by Archer Gray, Firestartr, The London Co-Investment Fund, Essex Innovation (GV Advisors), Seedcamp and a number of international Angel investors. The sale of Colony to Fantastec, which completed in November 2017, was brokered by Intersection M&A and Taylor Wessing, with Archer Gray acting as advisors to the Colony shareholders. I would like to thank our amazing team, Board, investors, advisors, licensor partners and users for their support over Colony’s journey.
